U.S. Senator John McCain is dead

Senator and former White House candidate John McCain died on Saturday at the age of 81, as a result of brain cancer. A former war hero, he had become a figure in politics in the United States. The Republican was also one of Donald Trump’s most ardent detractors.

U.S. Republican Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, an unfortunate presidential candidate in the 2008 presidential election against Barack Obama and President Donald Trump’s critic, died on Saturday.

He was reportedly 82 years old on 29 August. The Arizona Senator had brain cancer, discovered by his doctors in July 2017. On Friday, his family announced that he had decided to end his treatment.

John McCain had become a public figure during the Vietnam War. His plane had was shot dead during a bombing mission over Hanoi, the capital of North Vietnam. In particular, he was beaten and tortured at the famous “Hanoi Hilton” prison. It had emerged in March 1973 with a permanent infirmity.

This son and grandson of admirals of the Navy had bumped the Republican Party’s inauguration in the presidential election in 2000, but he had been ousted by George W. Bush. He had become the party’s candidate eight years later, but was defeated by Democrat Barack Obama, who became the first black president of the United States.

John McCain often had a hard tooth against President Donald Trump, a Republican like him, and was also his target. The Arizona senator criticized Donald Trump’s populism, but also his support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and other foreign leaders, whom he called.
