Will you come back? Don’t go back? For months (or even years), Lady Gaga Harlequin has been wanted by her audience, implying that she is working on producing new songs. Since then, speculation has been going well. What does the most crazy American singer of contemporary pop music have in store, after exploring dance, jazz and even country with her fifth album, Joanne? While she will be on the bill on October 2 of the blockbuster Joker: Made in Two in the role of the terrible Harley Quinn, the Joker’s companion camped by Joaquin Phoenix, the artist has just unveiled the release of his new album, Harlequin, scheduled for Friday, September 26. A record that will accompany her new film, as she announced on her social networks. Vogue takes stock of the information to be known before the release of the new opus.
From the Chromatica Ball to Lady Gaga Harlequin
Remember: we are at the heart of the summer of 2022, Lady Gaga defends her sixth album Chromatica on the stage of the Stade de France, with cleverly worked choreographies and impressive pyrotechnics. The monumental tour takes the codes of ball rooms. When the latter ends, the singer and actress slowly withdraws from public life to devote herself to the role-playing preparation of Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (or Harley Quinn), for the real-false musical Joker: Made to Two by Todd Phillips. At the same time, she is working on the capture of the Chromatica Ball, which was finally unveiled this year. At the end of the film, two messages are displayed in full: “GAGA RETURNS” then “LG7” (Gaga returns in French, and the number 7, number of his next album). But still no release date. In the meantime, the singer unveiled a brand new original song, the first in four years (if one excludes her work on the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack): “Die With a Smile”. An unforgettable collaboration with Bruno Mars, which should not appear on the upcoming album. In a statement, the singer said, “I was finishing my own album in Malibu and one evening, after a long day, Bruno Mars asked me to come to his studio to listen to what he was working on. It was about midnight when I arrived and I was blown when I heard what he had started doing. We stayed up all night and finished writing and recording the song.”
Presented at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, Joker: Made of Two allowed Lady Gaga to get out of her media retreat, to explain that she had spent a lot of time in the studio in recent months – especially about preparing the film. Here and there, the pop star was having fun implying that her new music was moving away from the shores she had explored so far, and that her next album would have nothing to do with her previous productions. Simple teasing or real confession? The answer could not be delayed any longer.
What can we expect from Lady Gaga’s new album?
From jazz with Tony Bennett to country to religious aspects with Joanne to the pop dance of her debut on The Fame Monster (2009), Lady Gaga has repeatedly proven her ability to reinvent herself. With Lady Gaga Harlequin, it’s hard to imagine the osus’ sounds, knowing that no single has been unveiled to date. Composed of thirteen songs, the record was featured on the artist’s Instagram account with a series of cryptic messages ranging from “I’m ready for my interview” to “Don’t tell me what I should wear”. Earlier in the week, some billboards had the number “6.5”, suggesting that this would not be a full-fledged studio album, unlike the one she announced at the end of the Gaga Chromatica Ball.

Now known: in 2024, Lady Gaga spent most of her time in Shangri-La, Malibu’s recording studio owned by Rick Rubin. A place with stripped-down energy, with its white walls and painted floors. There, she recorded Harlequin, this famous surprise project, as well as her next studio album, LG7, which will be released in February (and whose first single is due to be released in October). “I have developed a relationship with this place, which I perceive almost as a full person,” says the fellow of Vogue. In the same interview, she explains how she brought the music to Joker’s heart: Made to Two: “I wrote a waltz for the film. And I had a pianist, Alex Smith, who I asked to accompany me in my scenes. There are moments in the movie when I play an adult woman singing like a little girl. And it evolves in the world with this kind of immaturity, which I found interesting.” Without revealing too much of her return, Lady Gaga also claimed that he would be resolutely pop, notably under the influence of her fiancé, Michael Polansky. There are still two more days to wait, before hearing the sounds.
