King Von’s sudden demise

Authorities were still attempting to determine how the rapper, King Von, whose real name was Dayvon Daquan Bennett, died and whether the Atlanta Police Department was connected to his death or the deaths of two other individuals who were also critically injured in the early hours of Friday.

King Von was shot and died during this morning’s incident, according to an APD statement given to NPR on Friday. They are also aware of rumours that he was shot and killed by APD officers.

Investigators currently think that Mr. Bennett was shot during the first gunfight between the two groups of men, before the police arrived and tried to put an end to the shooting.

Von’s passing had immediate repercussions; it began as a Twitter rumour before being verified by people close to the rapper. In an Instagram tribute this morning, Ghazi Shami, the CEO and founder of Empire, Von’s record label, initially seemed to corroborate the news (right).

Born in 1994 in Chicago’s Parkway Gardens neighbourhood, Bennett never really avoided his run-ins with the law, even though he moved to Atlanta to find serenity and get away from his homeland. King Von was best known as a historian of street life, crafting tales of stressful evenings on the streets and his wish to break free from the gangster mentality. Many of his most well-known songs were homages to Chicago.
