The late Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, passed away. She was sixty-four. In a statement that was able to get on Tuesday, President Nelson, Nelson’s son, revealed her passing on Monday.
How Did Tyka Nelson die?
There was no cause of death mentioned. Variety also received confirmation of Prince’s passing from a representative of her estate. Additionally, Nelson’s Facebook page posted the news along with a passage from Prince’s song “All The Critics Love U In New York” that mentioned November 4.
“The daughter of Mattie and John Nelson, Tyka Nelson was best known as (Prince’s) sister and worked to keep his legacy alive with his fans attending fan events,” the family statement recalls.
Like her well-known brother, Nelson was a singer as well. She put out four albums, the most recent of which came out in 2011. Both she and Prince were the offspring of musicians Mattie Della Shaw and John L. Nelson. The singer of “Purple Rain” also had a half-brother who passed away in 2019 at the age of 66, as well as multiple half-siblings.
In 2016, Nelson collected the American Music Award for “Purple Rain”‘s outstanding soundtrack on Prince’s behalf after he passed away from an unintentional drug overdose.
In 2018, Nelson told Studio 10 that she and her brother were “very close” as children and that “my parents kind of told him that he would have to take care of me.”
Nelson said to the Minnesota Star Tribune earlier this year that she was writing a memoir and retiring from performance. She remarked, “I’m getting older,” “I wasn’t a vocalist at all. I write. It just so happens that I can sing. I like to sing.
Nelson also remembered the final time she spoke to her brother, four days prior to his passing.
According to a shocking revelation published in September by The New York Times Magazine, Prince’s former girlfriends accused him of abuse in a nine-hour documentary that had not yet been aired. Nelson reportedly featured in the documentary and talked about their father’s alleged maltreatment of them in their home.
