The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) has denounced this Sunday “powerful explosions in the area of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant” during the last hours. Russia has reported up to 14 heavy artillery hits Ukrainian only on Sunday, one of which fell on the roof of the Special Building Number 2 of the plant.
IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossithrough a statement has indicated that these attacks “abruptly end a period of relative calm at these facilities and once again highlight the need to apply measures to avoid a nuclear accident”.
In this way, the IAEA has thus verified bombardments in the surroundings and in the nuclear power plant itself in Europe. Specifically, Rossi has mentioned that there has been “more than a dozen explosions” who were able to hear and in some cases see the experts from this body present at the scene.
The IAEA inspectors have been informed by the management of the plant that there has been damage to some buildings, systems and equipment“but none of them are security critical.”
Grossi has warned that This news is “extremely worrying”. “The explosions have occurred at the site of this huge nuclear power plant and it is completely unacceptable. Whoever is responsible must cease immediately. As I have said many times, you are playing with fire!” He stressed.
Along these lines, Grossi has defended the idea of establish a security zone around the nuclear power plant. In recent months this possibility has been negotiated, so far without success. “I am not going to give up until it is a reality. These latest bombings show that it is more necessary than ever,” he reiterated.
