Atletico Madrid and Porto stars Joao Félix and Pepe have spoken out about Portugal coach Fernando Santos’ decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for his big win against Switzerland on Tuesday.
The legendary striker was on the bench when his side recorded an impressive round of 16 win over Switzerland with his replacement, Goncalo Ramos scoring three of the goals.
The former Manchester United star went on with just 17 minutes left in the game, but was unable to add to his tally of a tournament goal.
Both Pepe and Félix are very supportive of the captain of their national team and believe that the coach’s decision should be respected.
“Whether Cristiano is there or not, the important thing is the collective. The team also plays well when Cristiano is there. It was a great game for the whole team,” Félix told reporters after the game.
And Pepe, Ronaldo’s former teammate at Real Madrid, 39, added: “He knows perfectly well that the most important thing is ‘us’. What happened today was the coach’s choice and must be respected.
