Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo’s former Manchester United team-mate, has suggested the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was not happy about being benched for Portugal’s 6-1 win over Switzerland.
Head coach Fernando Santos left the 37-year-old out of the starting XI for the round of 16 tie at the 2022 World Cup.
Ronaldo watched his replacement, Goncalo Ramos, score a hat-trick against the Swiss, to set up a quarter-final against Morocco.
“Do you think anyone likes to be on the bench?” Fernando said.
“I don’t think Cristiano is happy. If the coach puts me on the bench in the next game, he would make me angry ”.
And he added: “When Cristiano plays and the team loses, everyone talks. [He is] the most famous player in the world. Nobody is more famous than Cristiano in sports, not in football, in sports
