Antoine Griezmann‘s return to Atletico Madrid isn’t going to plan, with the Frenchman yet to score, provide an assist or even have a shot on target after his first five games.
The deadline day arrival looked to be a real coup for Los Colchoneros and the cherry on top of an already impressive transfer window but, so far, he isn’t living up to expectations and looks a shadow of the Griezmann that Rojiblancos fans remember from his first spell at the club.
A period of adaptation is always to be expected with a new signing, but after 304 minutes, more was expected of Griezmann, especially as he knows the club, the coach, LaLiga Santander and he arrived match fit as he had been playing with Barcelona before the move. While it is still very early in the season, some are beginning to be a bit concerned that the France international hasn’t got going yet.
“Griezmann’s situation is worrying, he isn’t showing up anywhere,” former Atleti player Milinko Pantic told Radio MARCA.
“He has to show up because he’s a key player for us.”
Saturday’s defeat to Alaves at Mendizorrotza was the Griezmann‘s first 90 minutes since his return to Atleti, but it was a disappointing afternoon for the whole team and Diego Simeone wants to see more from all his players.
“I always expect more of all my players, it’s the only way to be demanding of ourselves, we expect more of them,” said Simeone before that game when asked about Griezmann, although no doubt he was thinking it afterwards too.
In LaLiga Santander for Los Colchoneros, Griezmann is averaging just one dribble per game and his passing accuracy is a mere 70 percent.
Everyone knows how good he can be, but the worry for Simeone and Atleti fans is whether this is a just a slow start or if Griezmann won’t get back to the level he was at before.
Time will tell and the 30-year-old should by no means be written off yet, especially with El Cholo in charge as he knows how to get the best out of him, but it’s been a disappointing start to his comeback and the seeds of doubt are beginning to be sown about whether Atleti have signed the Griezmann they remember or the Griezmann that played for Barcelona.
