West Nile virus (VNO) is primarily transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes.

Since West Nile virus was first identified in New York in 1999, more than 2,600 people in the United States have died from West Nile virus.

West Nile virus is usually spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

It does not spread from person to person through casual contact.

In rare cases, WNV can be transmitted through blood transfusion, organ transplantation, laboratory exposure, or mother-to-child transmission.

symptom West Nile infections include: fatigue, fever, headache, body aches, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.

80% of infected people are asymptomatic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 1 percent of those infected develop severe neuroinvasive diseases such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the protective membrane covering the brain and spinal cord).

There is no specific vaccine or treatment for WNV.

The most effective prevention methods are avoiding mosquito bites, using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing when outdoors.

1937— Uganda reports its first West Nile virus case. It is common throughout Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East.
