Fayza Lamari, Kylian Mbappe’s mother, has reiterated the Paris Saint-Germain player’s desire to play for Real Madrid one day and the discussions they have had about it as a family.
There have been various accounts of the France international’s non-transfer saga played out over the summer and Lamari has been keen to set the record straight. She leaves no doubt that her son has an ambition to play for Los Blancos, but it seems there have been disagreements about when and doubts remain, suggesting that a move next year is far from a certainty.
“When [Kylian] wanted to go to Real Madrid, his father didn’t want him to and I said to wait until [the] Paris 2024 [Olympics], but he had his reasons and we supported him,” Lamari told Le Parisien.
“Four years ago when he chose PSG, I didn’t want him to go, I was scared, but he insisted and we helped him.
“When PSG told us he was staying, [Kylian] told me: mum, have you seen who I’ll be playing with this year? To win titles it’s best to stay with this team this year.”
Clearly, while Mbappe must have been frustrated at not getting his wish this summer, getting to play alongside Lionel Messi – and a host of other new signings – as well as Neymar, isn’t a bad second choice.
His mother’s words suggest that he is still happy enough and excited about playing for the French club this season, especially as Real Madrid, they believe, need reinforcements to be able to compete at the highest level.
“Four years ago Real Madrid were more attractive than PSG but we chose Paris,” said Lamari.
“This summer Kylian had chosen Real Madrid because he wanted to be there at the beginning of that story. If you add three or four players in the next four years, this Real Madrid could be a very different prospect.”
For Lamari, the Olympic Games are a huge deal and she sees a lot of importance in Kylian staying until after the 2024 Paris games. It is an ambition of the club, too, to retain him until then and he could earn a handsome bonus for doing so.
Although Mbappe‘s father, Wilfried Mbappe, and Lamari have now separated, they are still on the same page when it comes to their son’s future and Paris is their preference for the short term.
Ultimately, of course, the decision will be the 22-year-old’s and his parents will respect that. It does seem a question of when not if, but in the Mbappe family there is no rush to leave Paris just yet.
