Global Bank for Africa, United Bank for Africa, through its Corporate Social Responsibility Arm, the UBA Foundation, held its annual Christmas Lighting ceremony on Tuesday to mark the start of the festive season.
The sparkling Christmas lights of the Fundación UBA Gardens at UBA’s head office in Lagos Marina were activated by the bank’s Managing Director/Group CEO, Oliver Alawuba, in a grand ceremony witnessed by the key management personnel and some clients of the Bank.
Addressing those attending the ceremony, Alawuba reiterated that the annual lighting event is a symbol of hope for the coming year, the future and all the good it will bring to people’s lives.
Alawuba said: “UBA Foundation is focused on touching lives and giving back to its host communities. UBA through its foundation, the desire of the UBA Foundation remains committed to improving lives in everything we can. We always want to give back and this event is quite symbolic as it represents the affinity we have with our customers, employees and partners, as well as our communities.”
The general director of the UBA Foundation, Ms. Bola Atta, said that the Christmas lighting ceremony was important for the Foundation, adding: “Today is significant. Throughout the world, it is known in the Advent period as Giving Tuesday. It is a time to give back to those who do not have enough. It is a time to enlighten others, to give hope and to give gifts. Today we handed out many gifts and people were happy as we lit up the Foundation’s gardens to symbolize joy and hope. As an institution, we are constantly reminded of our promise to continue touching lives and showing kindness. In these difficult times, sharing even a little goes a long way.”
The lighting ceremony was attended by UBA staff and customers, who were serenaded with Christmas carols by the UBA Customer Service Center choir. It ended with a guided tour of the Fundación UBA gardens in the Marina de Lagos.
Over the years, the UBA Foundation has been very active in creating sustainable development in its host communities, and as part of its corporate social responsibility, the Foundation will feed tens of thousands of people in Africa during this festive season.
Fundación UBA, the CSR arm of Grupo UBA, is committed to the socioeconomic improvement of the communities in which the bank operates, focusing on development in the areas of Education, Environment, Economic Empowerment and other Special Projects.
