A recent report by Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside offers an update on the future of Memphis Depay. It looks like the Barcelona attacker is about to leave Catalonia in the upcoming January transfer window, with Manchester United among the clubs hoping to sign him.
The Premier League giants were in talks with Depay over a move in the summer transfer window. But the move did not materialize since the striker chose to stay at the Spotify Camp Nou.
However, a lot has changed since then, with Depay falling out of favor under Xavi Hernández. At the halfway point of the campaign, the forward has accumulated just over 100 minutes of league football, placing him behind Ferran Torres, Raphinha, Ansu Fati or Raphina in the hierarchical order.
Injuries didn’t help Depay either, as the striker has yet to recover from a knock he took earlier in the campaign. However, there are some in the Barcelona camp who believe the player was simply delaying his return to remain available for the Netherlands at the next World Cup.
However, Depay is in contention to leave Barcelona in January as he has virtually no prospects in Xavi’s plans. His current contract at Camp Nou also expires at the end of the season, which has made him an attractive option for Manchester United.
The English giants aim to bolster their options in the attacking unit in January, especially after an indifferent start to the campaign from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and even new signing Antony.
Although the journalist suggests that Manchester United or any other club have not yet started talks with Depay about a move in January, there is a possibility that the player could open himself to a transfer away from the Camp Nou, especially if he can join a team from first level.
“The future of Memphis Depay is uncertain.” Yes, there is a possibility that he will leave in January, but the decision will also be based on the proposals: he is a free agent in June and would only accept a top club, ”writes Romano.
“At the moment, I have been told that there are no talks with any club and that the World Cup could be a great opportunity for him.”
As a result, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Barcelona striker as he looks to further his career.
