TO A new bill in Georgia means that taxpayers in that state will soon receive a bonus refund. It happens after Governor Brian Kemp signed House Act 1302providing a highly anticipated one-time tax credit for those who filed income tax returns for both the 2020 and 2021 tax years.
“When the government gets more than it needs, I believe those dollars should be returned to the taxpayer because it’s your money, not the government’s.” Kemp explained.
How much is a tax refund check in Georgia?
The Georgia government said the tax credit would be $250 for those who are single or married but file separately. Then for those who are the head of the family, it will be $375. For those who are married and apply jointly, the check will be for $500.
When are tax refund checks sent out in Georgia?
This money will be returned to eligible taxpayers after they complete the 2021 tax year form. The deadline for this is April 18, so over the next few weeks, all residents of Georgia should have submitted their tax form and received a bonus refund shortly thereafter.
If you are set up for direct deposit, you will receive a wire transfer faster, while everyone else will be sent a paper check, which may take a little longer.
Who is eligible for tax benefits in Georgia?
As for who is eligible, the State of Georgia makes this clear on its website.
“Any Georgian who was a resident of Georgia for the entire year in 2020 and 2021 and also filed a personal income tax return for 2020 and 2021 is eligible for a refund,” they say. “Individuals filing a partial year and filing individual tax returns for both years (2020 and 2021) will be eligible for a prorated refund equal to the maximum amounts based on filing status multiplied by the share of their income taxed in Georgia.”
