Following the disclosure of its release date and other information online, EA and Respawn Entertainment promised that they could showcase the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor game at The Sport Awards, and the franchise clearly delivered. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is certainly one of the most anticipated titles of 2023, as the main game established an all-too-common place for the developing sub-franchise.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order added some bland Souls-like choices to the franchise, while also incorporating robust lightsaber gameplay and telling a compelling and definitive Star Wars story. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor takes place five years after the original title, inserting it into the same timeline as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s latest Disney Plus series. Aside from the Galactic Empire stepping up its search for survivors of Order 66, and Respawn acknowledging that Kestis should do “whatever it takes to stay alive,” not much has been revealed.
This gives Star Wars Jedi a darker tone, which is emphasized in the gameplay.
Cal has been shown to use a Stormtrooper as a shield, ride a wild animal, throw his lightsaber, slow down time with the power, reflect images rapidly while speeding up, and even hold a lightsaber modeled after Kylo Ren’s. It’s just a glimpse, interspersed with some plot, but it surely already shows how Respawn intends to improve the franchise.
In fact, there could be a lot more to see about the game in the coming months. With EA opting for shorter, IP-specific dial-up windows, it stands to reason that fans are looking more and more concerned about the game as it approaches release, much like the way it marketed Want for Velocity Unbound. In the meantime though, this will probably satisfy fans of the franchise.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on March 17, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Collection X.
