Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone spoke to the media on Friday ahead of welcoming Athletic Club to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday and he hinted that he plans to fit both Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix into his team in the near future.
Some have questioned what the return of the France international might mean for the development of the Portuguese starlet but the boss seems have plans which will see them play alongside each other.
“They can play together and in time they’ll be on the pitch at the same time,” said Simeone.
Griezmann isn’t enjoying the easiest start to his second spell at the club and it may take him some time to win over all the fans, many of whom bitterly remember how he left the club for Barcelona, but Simeone when asked about that insisted on the need to come together.
“I have no doubt what we have a good group and we need to be a team,” said Simeone.
“Tomorrow we’ll aim to have a good match against one of the most in-form teams in the competition, who have competed and compete very well.
“They have a great coach who has gotten all of his teams playing the way he wants them to. High pressure, but they know how to drop deep too, high full backs, they play a very dynamic football, with a lot of pace…I’m sure they’ll compete until the end in LaLiga.”
With little time to prepare for this fixture after their midweek exertions against Porto in the Champions League, El Cholo is naturally wary of Los Leones who have had all week to get ready for this one and are unbeaten this season.
In this fixture last season, Los Colchoneros emerged 2-1 victors, but in the last meeting between the pair, in San Mames in April, it was the Basque side who triumphed by the same scoreline.
“We’re wary of everything I mentioned about Athletic,” said Simeone.
“They are a very strong team. [On Saturday] we’ll see who starts better.”
