All stories in the book are fiction. However, there is a kernel of truth that the reader can find in many small towns in the Upper Peninsula.

The remote rural character of the stories presented here in North of Nelson: Volume I, will give the reader a sense of place and time that is rapidly disappearing throughout the rural north. Integral to this work are all the contemporary populist notions of love, hate, greed, culture and religion rooted in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Despite the regional inspiration of these stories, readers unfamiliar with the UP region will be able to thoroughly enjoy these stories. The themes in these stories are universal and transcend mere geography.

“You can find the same themes in any rural area. In the South, the West, and wherever, people are deeply connected to the rural lifestyle and value remoteness and disappearing wilderness,” says Moore. He shared that the book started with the story “Silent Mistress” which he originally wrote around 2018.

“It was my first attempt to explore my own rural childhood in northern Michigan. My father was a poor preacher in northern Lower Michigan, where I was exposed both to the want and kindness of the people who surrounded my father’s congregation and the village where we lived.’

Hilton Everett Moore completes the next book in the series – North of Nelson: Volume Iwhich hopes to be published and made available to the public by the end of 2022.
