“While other lawyers condemned his conduct, some objected to the seriousness of the charges, arguing that the case was improperly handled as if it were an act of domestic terrorism.”

By any rational definition, it is I was an act of domestic terrorism, but Biden’s handlers, Judge Brian Cogan, and these anonymous “other lawyers” are all on board with Urooj Rahman’s political outlook, so he’s going to skid with a sentence so light it’s beyond all proportion to what he did. Imagine Cogan telling a “right-wing insurrectional” that he or she was a “remarkable person.” it is inconceivable.

“New York City attorney cries in court as she is sentenced to 15 months behind bars for bombing an NYPD van with a Molotov cocktail fashioned from a Bud Light bottle during BLM protests,” Associated Press, November 19, 2022:

A New York City attorney was sentenced to 15 months behind bars Friday for torching an empty New York City police vehicle with another attorney during protests over the killing of George Floyd.

Before hearing her sentence, Urooj Rahman asked a judge to pardon her prison time and give her a “second chance” to redeem herself for what she called a momentary lapse in judgment.

“I am so sorry for my reckless and wrongful actions,” Rahman said through tears in Brooklyn federal court. ‘I don’t think there are enough words to express my grief and regret. …I completely lost myself in the excitement of the night.’

Rahman and Colinford Mattis were arrested amid clashes between protesters and police on May 30, 2020, during an outbreak of protests following the killing of Floyd by a police officer in Minnesota.

US District Judge Brian Cogan praised her for choosing a career in public interest law to fight social injustices.

“You are a remarkable person who did a terrible thing in one night,” Cogan said.

However, Cogan also scolded her for thinking she could get away with a violent protest.

‘It shows an incredible amount of arrogance. … It’s just a very arrogant way of thinking,” she said.

Federal prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 18 to 24 months as part of a plea deal.

Rahman and Colinford Mattis were arrested amid clashes between protesters and police on May 30, 2020, during an outbreak of protests following the killing of Floyd by a police officer in Minnesota.

Surveillance cameras recorded Rahman throwing an incendiary device at a parked police vehicle, setting its console on fire. No one was injured in the attack, but the vehicle was severely damaged.

Officers arrested the lawyers a short time later and said they found a lighter, a Bud Light beer bottle filled with toilet paper and a tank of gas in the back of a minivan driven by Mattis, a corporate lawyer. Prosecutors alleged that the lawyers planned to distribute and launch other Molotov cocktails.

While other lawyers condemned his conduct, some objected to the seriousness of the charges, arguing that the case was improperly handled as an act of domestic terrorism. When the federal prosecutor in Brooklyn called for the lawyers to be held without bail, 56 former federal prosecutors submitted a legal brief to the court criticizing the government’s handling of the case….
