BUTn an urgent message comes from Mexican governmentabout notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, he had just been arrested in Mexico by the country’s marines in a sting operation. There are no specific details about where he was arrested, but some local media indicate that it may have been in Chihuahua.
Quintero is mainly known for creating Guadalajara poster in the 1980s along with other notorious drug lords such as Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo and Ernesto Fonseca “Don Neto” Carrillo. Back on May 9, the DEA issued a warrant for his arrest and a $20 million ransom for the murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
Quintero has already served many years in a Mexican prison.
Rafael Caro Quintero was a scapegoat in the 1990s who initially took the blame when the Mexican government wanted to clean up the Guadalajara cartel. He was one of the first to fall along with “Don Neto”, who is known to have been detained in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. Quintero was sentenced to 40 years in a Mexican prison for the murder of Camarena and drug dealing.
However, Quintero served only 28 years and was released in 2013. Immediately after his release, the American government demanded retribution for the murder of their agent and quickly pressed the Mexican government for his arrest and extradition. The FBI immediately placed him among the ten most wanted criminals.
Caro Quintero may be extradited to the US.
This is where things get even more complicated for the drug lord, as a new arrest warrant was issued right after he got out. After Friday’s arrest, a new possibility of extradition to the United States became a very real possibility for the US government. If this happens, Quintero could spend the rest of his days in an American prison.
Caro Quintero was famously played by actor Tenoch Huerta in the hit. Narcos: Mexico on Netflix, although some details of the story are a re-enactment of what actually happened. Now Quintero is 69 years old. If he goes back to jail, chances are he could die there.
