Lionel Messi has made the list of 30 candidates to be within a chance of winning the Ballon d’Or this year and is favourite for the award after winning the Copa America with Argentina and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona.
The top scorer in LaLiga Santander last season discussed what it would mean to win his seventh Ballon d’Or, as well as who he would vote for the award if he had the opportunity to do so, during an interview with France Football.
“I don’t think I’m the favourite and I’ve never liked talking about it until the result is in,” Messi said in the interview. “It would be great to win another one, it’s already amazing to be the only player to have won six.”
As Messi mentioned, no one has won as many Ballon d’Or awards as the Paris Saint-Germain forward.
“A seventh would be incredible,” he admitted. “This past summer I won a trophy that was missing in the Copa America and that was the pinnacle for me. If I go on to win another Ballon d’Or, I’ll be very happy and very grateful, but I’m not thinking about it.”
As well as downplaying the importance of winning his seventh, Messi was also asked who else he would vote for if he had the opportunity.
“In my team there are at least two players for whom I’ll vote in Kylian and Ney. Then [Robert] Lewandowski, who has had a great year. But there’s also [Karim] Benzema,” he added.
