Mbappe drought continues as PSG beat Montpellier

Lionel Messi may have been absent through a knee injury on Saturday evening, yet Paris Saint-Germain were still able to take a 2-0 victory from their Ligue 1 meeting with Montpellier at the Parc des Princes on Saturday.

After being withdrawn in midweek, Messi wasn’t expected to play any part on Saturday evening, and it was down to Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to lead the line for Mauricio Pochettino‘s charges.

However, the opening goal came from a rather unexpected source as Idrissa Gueye found the net after 14 minutes of play with a powerfully struck effort into the roof of the net.

Ander Herrera had a chance to double the lead just before the break with a long-range shot, although it hit the crossbar and bounced out for a goal-kick.

Montpellier weren’t able to mount much of their own attacking moves, and they were put out of their misery in the 88th minute when Julian Draxler scored within a minute of being introduced.

The result keeps PSG at the top of Ligue 1, still yet to taste defeat this term, and they have a handy 10-point lead over Marseille in second place.

Mbappe is currently experiencing a mini-drought, having now gone three games without a goal.
