(Reuters) – American basketball player Brittney Griner, detained in Russia, faces criminal charges, Russian news agency RIA said on Monday, citing a Kremlin spokesman.

“Why are we holding him hostage? She violated Russian law and now she faces criminal charges,” Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by the RIA in an interview with US television station MSNBC.
