The French interior minister warned that “there will be extremely serious consequences.”
An update on the story The Point discussed here.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has vowed to resist mass migration. The low bar at stake here is the smuggling operation in which NGOs pick up mostly Muslim immigrants and “rescue” them by transporting them to Italy.
The new Italian government was light-hearted, refusing to allow male immigrants to leave the smuggling ships and enter Italy.
The smugglers of immigrants claimed that Italy had an obligation to take them because the Muslim immigrants were all vulnerable. Italy allowed women, children and anyone sick to enter and said “flag states” or the countries in which those ships were registered had to take them.
The confrontation proved successful with another migrant boat picking up and heading to France.
The French government has granted a safe harbor to the rescue ship Ocean Viking carrying 234 migrants.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said France would welcome the ship’s passengers at the military port in the city of Toulon on Friday.
The Norwegian-flagged ship, operated by the NGO SOS Méditerranée, has been at sea for almost three weeks.
Italy had refused to allow the immigrants to disembark on Italian territory, sparking a dispute with Paris.
Darmanin said the 230 passengers aboard the Ocean Viking would later be divided among France, Germany and other European countries.
Resistance is not useless.
France has responded with angry threats.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said Rome’s refusal to respond to calls for help from the ship in Italian waters was “incomprehensible” and “unacceptable”. He said it was “obvious that there will be extremely serious consequences for bilateral relations” between France and Italy.
What is incomprehensible is allowing countries to be invaded by those who try to destroy them.
The name Ocean Viking is appropriate as the passengers are ‘Vikings’ out to raid Europe.
