The year 2022 has 24 days to conclude, and in 25 days, the popular greeting would be Happy New Year.

This year has had its ups and downs, with different events shaking up the various aspects of life.

In the year, the students stayed home for about eight years due to a standoff between their professors and the federal government. Furthermore, the floods nearly engulfed the nation, displacing many Nigerians and claiming the lives of more than 600 people.

Similarly, some popular people have passed away within the year, while a new movement known as the Obidients rocked the political scene ahead of the 2023 general election.

During the year, Nigerians kept an eye on these and others with the help of a popular search engine, Google, and in its usual style, the platform has published the most popular searches of the year.

According to data released by the tech giant, some of the most searched questions this year were How to link NIN? How to buy shares? How to register in PVC online? What is lupus? Y What is NATO?

In addition, the results, which revealed the most searched terms, people, actors, musicians, topics, questions and interests of Nigerians, indicated that African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and Casemiro, Brazilian footballer, topped the top search categories for trends and best athletes and sportsmen, respectively.

Nigeria was knocked out of the AFCON 2022 competition by Tunisia in a 1-0 loss as Senegal beat Egypt to win their first Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year.

The strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which lasted for eight months, put the union in second place among the top trending searches for Nigerians in the reporting period.

Oxlade, a Nigerian singer-songwriter, topped the two categories of Most Popular People and Most Popular Musicians Searched for by Nigerians this year. Asake, an Afrobeat singer signed to YBNL Nation, ranked second on the list of top trending musicians. Anikulapo, an epic Nigerian fantasy film starring Kunle Remi and produced by Kunle Afolayan, topped the Trending Movies and Series category.

Questions like Who is Peter Obi’s running mate? Who is the APC presidential candidate? Who is Atiku’s running mate? Who is leading in the Osun State elections? Who is Tinubu’s running mate? Y Who is Peter Obi? reveal the growing interest of Nigerians in politics and next year’s elections.

Search terms related to entertainment such as delicacy lettering, bugaKizz Daniel’s song with Tekno and Will Smith they all topped their categories, revealing Nigerians’ interest in lyrics, songs and famous personalities.

And in a year with many high-profile deaths, the death of Queen Elizabeth was the most wanted loss, followed by gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, who died in April, and actress Ada Ameh, who died in August.

Google’s Year in Search is an annual analysis that reveals the top trending lists and also highlights what the world is looking to see, learn and do.

In Nigeria, this year’s Year in Search result shows increased interest in politics, entertainment, sports, lifestyle and notable personalities.
