Warner Bros. Discovery executives are reportedly close to formalizing a new name and platform for their upcoming streaming service that combines the pre-existing HBO Max and Discovery+ services. According to Varietythe new app may be called Max.
Representatives for Warner Bros. Discovery have declined to comment on the name change, though CNBC further informs that internally, the service has the code name “BEAM”. However, anonymous executives confirmed that Max is “the likely choice.” Other names are still being considered.
In 2021, CNBC he also reported that top WarnerMedia executives never liked the name HBO Max for their streaming service and were happy with the Discovery merger because it gave them a chance to change the name. However, as it should seemingly be pointed out, is switching from HBO Max to Max really not that big of a name change?
The combined platform HBO Max-Discovery+ is expected to launch in the US in spring 2023. It was originally scheduled for next summer. CEO David Zaslav shared that change on a November earnings call. JB Perrette, president and CEO of global streaming and gaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, said the merger and accelerated launch of the platform “is aimed at reducing churn so there’s something for everyone in the home…in the end of the day, putting all the content together was the only way we claim to make this a viable business.”
Executives on the earnings call also indicated that the company believes there is room to increase the price of HBO Max, which has stood at $15 per month since its launch in May 2020.
