Hazard eyes Asensio's place in Real Madrid's XI

Carlo Ancelotti seemingly has his mind made up on 10 of the 11 starters in Real Madrid‘s first-choice XI this season, with the only doubt coming with who should be the right winger.

As Vinicius Junior was ruled out of last Sunday’s defeat at Getafe due to COVID-19, Ancelotti had a choice to make between Rodrygo Goes, Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio when it came to picking who should start either side of Karim Benzema.

The Italian coach opted for Rodrygo and Asensio, with Hazard replacing the latter at half time. Real Madrid fans will be disappointed that none of the three truly took the initiative in the game.

Hazard edges it

Despite not making an impact on the result, Hazard‘s introduction in the second half will have given Ancelotti food for thought.

The 30-year-old was a more direct threat to Getafe when he came on for Asensio, which could end up seeing him usurp the Spaniard in this merry-go-round between the two and Rodrygo.

Ancelotti gave the Brazilian until the 67th minute before replacing him with Mariano Diaz, as Real Madrid went in search of an equaliser that never came.

The stats help Hazard

As Hazard has played as many minutes as Asensio against Getafe, it allows for an easy comparison when it comes to statistics.

In terms of touches, the former Chelsea star touched the ball almost double that of Asensio (43 to 22).

Hazard‘s hunger was also more evident, winning 7/10 duels compared to Asensio‘s 2/2 duels won.

What next for Real Madrid’s three wingers?

Once Vinicius has recovered from COVID-19, it is clear that Ancelotti will have to decide on one of Hazard, Asensio or Rodrygo for the vacant right winger position, as he has done throughout the season.

Whilst it seems that Rodrygo has the current advantage over both when it comes to trust from Ancelotti, Hazard‘s cameo against Getafe could have done enough to play himself into the starting line-up.

A Copa del Rey tie against Alcoyano awaits Real Madrid next on Wednesday, and whether or not Ancelotti rests any of the three wingers ahead of their LaLiga Santander fixture against Valencia remains to be seen.

Hazard will be hopeful that he has done enough to replace Asensio in Ancelotti‘s list of preferences.
