Nigeria’s CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele is back in Nigeria after a week-long vacation outside the country.

A CBN press release reveals that he resumed his duties on Monday, January 16, 2023 as concerns grew over his absence since the beginning of the year.

The press release was signed by Osita Nwanisobi.

The main bank’s press release stated the following;

  • “The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has resumed his duties after his annual vacation abroad. Mr. Emefiele, who took leave of absence in December 2022, resumed his work today, Monday, January 16, 2023. The Governor resumed his duties with renewed vigor before the first meeting of the year of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) scheduled for January 23 and 24, 2023”.
  • “Mr. Emefiele remains committed to carrying out the task before him in accordance with his oath and the political direction of President Muhammadu Buhari. While we thank the public for keeping faith in the Bank, we urge Nigerians to continue to support the policies of the Bank aimed at ensuring a stable financial system and the Nigerian economy in general”.

Meanwhile, several online media reports (not including Nairametrics) alleging that CBN headquarters were raided by members of the state security service have been denied. In a statement seen by Nairametrics, the SSS claimed the news was false and “quite misleading” and that it “invaded” the central bank. The statement was signed by his public relations officer Peter Afunanya.

  • “The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to false news circulating that their agents have invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested their Governor, today 16/1/23. This is fake news and quite misleading.”

However, reliable sources with knowledge of the matter told Nairametrics that several consultations were held before the governor’s return with some high-profile Nigerians to avoid a potential confrontation.

One source suggested that it was important that the matter between the CBN governor and the SSS be handled sensitively considering the possible implication on the economy.

…this is a developing story.
