Electronic music pioneer Greek composer Vangelis dies

The Greek composer Vangelis, who signed the music for Chariots of Fire and the national anthem for the 2022 World Cup, has died at the age of 79.

Considered one of the pioneers of electronic music, Greek composer Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, known as Vangelis, died at the age of 79.

Vangelis died on Tuesday, May 17, according to a statement by the Athens News Agency, citing his lawyers. The cause of his death was not specified.

The composer has achieved international fame with the soundtracks of the films Chariots of Fire (1981 Academy Award for Best Music), Blade Runner or 1492: Christopher Columbus.
