Ecuador defeats Qatar 2-0 in the opening of the 2022 World Cup in Russia

Ecuador got off to a winning start against hosts Qatar in the tournament opener at Al Bayt Stadium as the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar kicked off after an impressive opening ceremony.

Hosts Qatar lose 2-0 to Ecuador in the opening match of the World Cup as Enner Valencia scores both goals.

Enner Valencia scored an early one for Ecuador in the third minute before it was ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR) at Al Bayt Stadium. Valencia put the ball back into the Qatari goal, from a penalty, in minute 16, and then in minute 31, he scored again with an accurate header.

Ecuador now leads Group A of the World Cup with 3 points. Senegal will face the Netherlands in the next Group A match on Monday.

Qatar, which played Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, other Qatari royals and various foreign leaders in a crowd of 67,372, had only five shots in the match and none hit. The team had just two touches inside the rival area.

Qatar became the only host nation to lose an opening match in World Cup history. Qatari fans began pouring out of Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday well before the final whistle after a dominating display from the Ecuadorians.
