Chaplain, proposed as PP candidate for La Rioja government – EFE News

Logroño, (EFE).- The Regional Executive Committee of the PP of La Rioja has unanimously approved the transfer to the National Electoral Committee of the proposal of Gonzalo Capellán as candidate of this political formation for the presidency of the regional government in the regional elections of May 2023.

Ceniceros’ proposal received the support of 54 of the 65 Executive Committee members who attended the meeting on Thursday, the PP added in a note.

“We cannot afford the luxury of letting the people of La Rioja down. I know we’re not going to. There is a lot of work to be done, that is why we must abandon the time for conjectures and move on to certainties,” Ceniceros stressed in his speech before voting his proposal in favor of Capellán.

He insisted that “it is time to turn the page, to do it in the best possible way, with generosity, leaving aside the staff and putting the interest of the people of La Rioja before any other question”.

For him, Capellán represents “renewal, illusion and unity”; and he is “the right person to lead the necessary change that thousands of people in La Rioja are demanding”.

“It’s time for La Rioja to make up for lost time”, according to Ceniceros, for whom the PP has “the best project and continues to have the greatest human capital in this community”.

“Together, we are unbeatable. We have shown it in the past and I am convinced that in May we will do it again.”

This proposal by Capellán came after the La Rioja PP has experienced in recent months the presentation of two candidates for the presidency of the party in a future congress that has not yet been convened and an approach, through of regional deputy Carlos Cuevas, to search for a list of readers.

These two pre-candidatures were led by the autonomous deputies Alfonso Domínguez, who withdrew it on the 8th and expressed his support for Capellán, considered, in some sectors, as the candidate for the national leadership; and Alberto Bretón, who insists on calling a congress.

Gonzalo Capellán (Haro, La Rioja, 1972) is professor of contemporary history at the University of La Rioja (UR).

During his political career, he held the positions of General Director of Culture of the Government of La Rioja (2003-2005), Regional Deputy (2007-2008), Minister of Education, Culture and Tourism of Executive of La Rioja (2011-2014) and Minister of Education of the United Kingdom and Ireland (2014-2020).
