Canada seeks extradition of French priest accused of sexual assault

Canada has asked for the extradition of a French priest accused of sexually assaulting Inuit children more than 30 years ago, Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti confirmed Thursday, Aug. Symbol of impunity.

“I am aware that the extradition request to France has been made public and my department officials have just confirmed it”the federal minister said in an email to AFP, declining to provide further details. “It is important for Canada and its international partners to fully investigate and prosecute serious crimes”he added.

The news comes as Pope Francis has just completed a trip to Canada that will feature a request for forgiveness from indigenous peoples.

Father Joannes Rivoire, who has spent 30 years in Canada’s far north, has been the subject of a Canadian arrest warrant since February, after he filed a new complaint in September over a sexual assault that occurred when he was around 47 years old. So far, he has never been charged, and authorities have not specified the total number of his alleged victims.

Nine-year-old claims innocence

Mr. Rivoire was the subject of a warrant for sexually assaulting three minors between 1998 and 2017. It was never acted upon. The priest left Canada in 1993 and now lives in Lyon, France.But Mr Riva, who holds dual citizenship, represents “A questionable” because he is ” very complicated” The French were extradited, a source familiar with the matter told AFP.

The nine-year-old, who was recently questioned by the media, declared his innocence. In northern Canada, his case remains a symbol of impunity for sex offenders in the church.

“We want Rivoire to be extradited to Canada to face his charges in court, and we have asked the Pope to intervene by asking him to return to Canada”a representative of the Inuit people in Nunavut told AFP Kilikvak Kabloona during the Pope’s visit.
