Atletico Madrid sporting director warns: The years of big signings are over

Andrea Berta, Atletico Madrid‘s sporting director since July 2017, took advantage of the ‘Premio Maestrelli’ award ceremony to discuss the progress of Los Rojiblancos in recent years.

Berta also talked about Atletico‘s below-par season after winning LaLiga Santander last term and explained what the future holds for the team.

Atletico Madrid were not used to winning and something important was built with the [Diego] Simeone cycle,” said Berta, according to Calciomercato.

“When you win important things, the following year you always lose something, perhaps in terms of motivation. You can’t win all the time and now you have to start again.

“The years of big signings are over. For us the important thing will be to continue with this squad, which has value, with players who have great futures. We will have to wait for the market to get underway.”

Who is Andrea Berta?

Italian director Andrea Berta, who was appointed by Miguel Angel Gil Marin as Atletico Madrid‘s sporting director in 2017, is 50 years old.

After a career in banking, he began working in the world of football at Carpenedolo before making the big leap to become sporting director at Parma in 2007 and Genoa in 2008.

In 2013 he joined Atletico Madrid as technical director, and four years later he was promoted to sporting director.
