There was palpable tension at the Alaba International Market in Ojo, Lagos State as traders clashed with thugs over extortion.
SaharaReporters gathered that the trouble started when the businessmen refused to be extorted in the name of charging taxes for the park.
He said, “The trouble started when the new Chairman of the Alaba Electronic Union ordered the thugs known as Agbero to stop the collection of various levies imposed on drivers entering the market.
“The thugs on their part told the chairman of the new union that the former chairman sold them the collection of levies at the cost of N16 million. “The new chairman, however, due to complaints from the traders about extortions and illegal taxes from the thugs, asked them to stop the collection.
He asked them to tell him the balance of the money paid to his predecessor so he could pay them back but they refused. “Therefore, on Tuesday, the thugs came to continue the illegal collection but were resisted and expelled. As a result, traders have been advised not to open their shops today for fear that they will mobilize to attack the traders.
