One suspect was charged with first degree murder and attempted murder Thursday to inject that left two people dead and six others injured on the Las Vegas Strip.
Yoni Barrios, 32, was arrested by guards “within minutes” after the stabbing, Capt. James LaRochelle of the police said at a news conference on Thursday. He was charged with two counts of open murder and six counts of attempted murder, The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced on Friday.
The weapon, described by police as a knife with a “long blade,” was recovered from the scene.
“This was an isolated incident,” LaRochelle said in a statement Monday. “All the evidence shows that Barrios acted alone and there are no suspects at this time.”
Here’s what we know:
2 people died, 6 others were injured
The victims, who were a mix of tourists and locals, were taken to hospitals for treatment, and three were in critical condition, LaRochelle said.
The Clark County coroner’s office will identify the victims after next of kin have been notified.
What happened on the Las Vegas Strip?
The attack happened around 11:40 a.m. along the Las Vegas Strip, near the Palazzo hotel-casino, LaRochelle said.
After the first stabbing, the suspect continued walking down the sidewalk and attacked other people, he said.
“There was no doubt before that,” LaRochelle said.
“This is clearly a tragic and complex, complex investigation,” he added.
Witnesses describe a chaotic scene on the Las Vegas Strip
Witnesses told Las Vegas TV stations that the assault took place in several locations along the Strip. Some of the victims looked like showgirls, he said.
Pierre Fandrich he told KTNV he saw “a lot of blood” as a woman ran across the bridge. He says that one of the victims was on the ground, while the other had a knife wound on his back while trying to help his wife who had fallen. A bystander performed CPR until authorities arrived, he said.
“Our hearts go out to all the victims of this tragedy,” Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak said on Twitter.
