Two Connecticut police officers were fatally shot and another seriously injured after an ambush Wednesday in the suburban city of Bristol, police said.
Connecticut State Police said Thursday that a 911 call about a possible domestic violence incident appeared to be “a deliberate act to attract law enforcement to the scene” in Bristol, located 20 miles southwest of Hartford, the state capital.
Bristol police responded to a call, involving two children, around 10:30 pm Wednesday when they encountered a man outside the home, Connecticut State Police Sgt. Christine Jelteman said at a press conference on Thursday.
Shots were fired, and one officer was pronounced dead at the scene, Jelteman said. Two other policemen were hit by gunfire. One died at the hospital and the other was seriously injured.
Police have not yet said who fired the shots, who fired the fatal shots, or how many shots were fired in total. No video of the altercation has been made public.
Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould identified the dead officers as Sgt. Dustin Demonte, 35, and Officer Alex Hamzy, 34. He said the injured officer, 26-year-old Alex Iarato, is recovering after surgery.
The suspect, 35-year-old Nicholas Brutcher, was shot and killed, and his 32-year-old brother, Nathan Brutcher, was wounded, police said.
It is unclear whether the Brutchers or their family have a lawyer.
Neighbors said they heard two or three gunshots, about 30 in total.
“I heard the whole battle going on behind me,” said Danny Rodriguez, who said he was outside his home across the street when the gunshot rang out. It was so strong that he could smell gunshots in the air, he said.
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont’s office Flags in Connecticut are lowered to half-staff in honor of the seniors.
“This is a senseless tragedy, and my prayers are with their families, loved ones, and other officials,” Lamont tweeted.
The police said a procession would accompany the bodies of the two dead officers from the hospital to the coroner’s office.
“We ask that your thoughts and prayers be with the family, the officer and all those affected,” Connecticut State Police tweeted.
